제주 ‘오름 10選’

근래 제주도에서는 ‘오름’등산이 유행입니다. ‘오름’이란 독립된 산 또는 봉우리를 이르는 제주 방언입니다. 서울 등지에서 내방한 관광객들도 오름을 오르는 사람이 점차 늘어나고 있습니다. 비교적 가볍게 준비하고 즐길 수 있는 것이 오름 등산인데, 오름 꼭대기에 올라보면 제주도 자연의 묘미를 느낄 수 있습니다.

화산도(火山島) 제주도의 한라산 자락에 산재하는 ‘오름’을 단성화산 또는 기생화산이라고 합니다. 지금까지 불러온 기생화산이란 용어는 측화산, 종속화산(Parasitic volcano, Lateral volcano, Adventive volcano)이라고 알려지고 있었으나, 최근에 제주 오름은 기생화산이 아니라 단성화산, 즉 독립적 마그마에 의해 만들어진 화산이란 연구발표가 있었습니다.

오름이 생긴 원인이야 어떻든 제주섬에는 360개 정도의 오름이 한라산을 중심으로 섬 전체에 산재해 있습니다. 이 숫자는 이탈리아 시칠리아 섬의 에트나산의 260개보다 훨씬 많아 이 지구상에서 가장 많은 단성화산을 가진 곳이 바로 제주섬이라고 합니다.

저는 1970년대 제주도에서 신문기자 생활을 시작한 이래 이들 360개 오름을 전부 올랐습니다. 처음에는 야생화나 곤충 등 생태계 사진을 찍기 위해 관심을 가졌으나 1980년대부터 오름 자체에 관심을 갖게 되었습니다. 오름은 생태계로 가치가 있을 뿐 아니라 제주도 전설과 역사의 스토리텔링 무대로서도 흥미로운 곳입니다.

앞으로 10회에 걸쳐 제주도의 오름 중에 가장 빼어난 <제주오름 10선>을 소개하여 드리겠습니다.
